Abstract:

Background: Recent research has provided evidences indicating the importance of endothelin axis in carcinogenesis. According to our knowledge, there are little information about endothelin A receptor (ETA) expression in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). So, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of ETA in OSCC and normal oral mucosa (NOM). Methods:In this cross-sectional study, studied group composed of paraffin-embedded tissue blocks of 21 OSCCs and 20 NOMs. Four micron sections were prepared from tissue blocks and stained with ETA antibody using immunohistochemistry (IHC). Percentage of stained cells and staining intensity were compared between OSCC and NOM groups and also between different grades of OSCC using Mann-Whitney, Chi-Square and Kruskal-Wallis statistical tests. Results:In OSCC group, all cases showed positive staining  for ETA while in NOM group, 17 cases showed no staining. Comparison of the percentage of stained cells and staining intensity for ETArevealed a significant difference between OSCC and NOM groups (P<0.001). There was also a significant difference between different grades of OSCC with respect to the percentage of stained cells (P=0.01) so that with increase in grade, ETA expression was also increased.  Conclusion:The results of this study support the role of ETA receptor in carcinogenesis process and progression of OSCC.

Comparing Immunohistochemical Expression of Podoplanin between Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Normal Oral Mucosa

Background and purpose: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the sixth most common cancer in the world. Podoplanin is a mucin-like integral membrane glycoprotein that is expressed in the lymphatic endothelial cells but not in the blood vascular endothelial cells. The aim of the present study was to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of podoplanin and evaluating lymphangiogenesis i...

Immunohistochemical Eexpression of Endothelin A Receptor in Dysplastic Oral Mucosa

Background: Recent researches have provided evidences of the importance of endothelin axis in carcinogenesis. According to our knowledge, no data exists about endothelin A receptor (ETA) expression in dysplastic oral mucosa (DOM). Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate immunohistochemical expression of ETA in DOM. Methods:</strong...

Immunohistochemical Evaluation of Fascin in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Background and purpose: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the eighth most common cancer in men and the fifteenth in women. Localized recurrence and metastasis to regional lymph nodes are major problems in these patients. Fascin is a 55- kDa protein from the family of actin-binding proteins that is expressed in cells with membranous bronchial tubes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expre...

A comparative study on the mast cells count in oral squamous cell carcinoma and normal oral mucosa

Introduction: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the 10 most common malignant tumors and SCC accounts 94% of all oral malignancies. Mast cells are regarded as complex and multifunctional cells, playing a significant role in immunopathology . The aim of this study is to evaluate the number of mast cells in tissue sections of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) in comparison with norma...

The Expression of P53 in Leukoplakia, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Normal Oral Epithelium Using Immunohistochemical Staining Method

Background & Aims: Leukoplakia is the most common premalignant or potentially malignant lesion of the oral mucosa and its potentiality for malignant transformation is unpredictable. The aim of the present study was to evaluate p53 expression in normal oral epithelium, leukoplakia and oral squamous cell carcinoma. Methods: The standard Biotin streptavaidin peroxidase immunohistochemical staining...

comparative immunohistochemical analysis of angiogenesis and mast cell density in oral normal mucosa and squamous cell carcinoma

background: squamous cell carcinoma (scc) is the most common malignancy in oral cavity. angiogenesis is essential for the development and progression of scc. recently, some studies have reported that mast cells may play a role in tumor progression via promoting angiognesis. since the results of various studies on the role of mast cells in tumor progression is not uniform, the aim of this study ...
